Beliefs that provide "vital benefits" may be regarded by the individual as true.
The distinction is that in science, formulae are subject to public verification and can be proved false when they fail the tests. Not so for religious and other metaphysical beliefs, which cannot be verified or falsified.
Something that works to make you feel good. Not something that works out to be correct.
Truth is a variable associated with successful confirmation of an idea.

A Wall Street trader sets up an illegal deal over the weekend, based on insider information, but the FTC investigator doesn't confirm his hypothesis that the trader has committed the crime until the next Friday. Does it follow that "the trader committed the crime" wasn't true on the weekend but became true on the next Friday, just because it was confirmed?
